A lot of people never get beyond this point because of the "blank page syndrome." Of course, t-shirt design software like Hanes T-ShirtMaker(TM) provides the quickest cure, but if you"re going it alone, don"t allow the blank page or screen to inhibit you, just start. Starting something, no matter how trivial or unrelated, is better than nothing. Even if your first efforts amount to no more than doodling or drawing stick figures, ideas will eventually be generated. Starting is 90% of creating a successful design. And remember, a successful design is not necessarily one that wins awards and the accolades of all your peers. Rather, it is a design that accomplishes your purpose. If Aunt Martha blushes, you have created a winner.
When your idea generator seems to be out of power, look for design ideas in books and magazines. The point here is stimulation, not plagiarism. This exposure to others" designs jump starts your own thought processes. When you start brainstorming (even if you are alone) you will get ideas, some great, some lousy. Put them all down on paper immediately. You can bet the farm your ideas will flee two seconds after you get them if you haven"t recorded them. Continue making rough sketches. Keep the sketches coming until you get tired, bored or run out of ideas.
The above approach works well for most people, but not all. There are a few who need to process design ideas in their mind and end up with the one design idea they will use. They neither pick up a pencil nor turn on the computer. If you"re one of these, get those brain waves going.
